I feel bad for him. He seems to have been a genuinely nice guy and deserved much better.
Book: JFK Jr.'s wife had drug problem Monday, June 30, 2003 Posted: 4:32 PM EDT (2032 GMT)
A new Kennedy family biography details problems in John F. Kennedy Jr.'s marriage.
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- By the time they died in a 1999 plane crash, John F. Kennedy Jr., and his wife, Carolyn Bessette, were living a life of separate beds and violence, and Bessette was struggling with a drug problem, according to a new book by Kennedy family biographer Edward Klein excerpted in Vanity Fair on Monday .
In "The Kennedy Curse: Why Tragedy Has Haunted America's First Family for 150 Years," Klein said that two days before he died, Kennedy, the only son of assassinated U.S. President John F. Kennedy, told a friend his marriage was deteriorating.
"It's got to stop. Otherwise we're headed for divorce," Kennedy told the friend in a call from the Stanhope Hotel, where Klein said he took refuge from his wife's cocaine habit and violent temper.
"I want to have kids but whenever I raise the subject with Carolyn, she turns away and refuses to have sex with me," Kennedy told the friend. He had picked out a name, Flynn, for the son he dreamed of having, Klein reported.
Klein quoted Bessette's fashion industry friends as saying it was known she was a heavy user of drugs, and that Kennedy caught her snorting lines of cocaine with friends at the couple's New York apartment. "You're a cokehead," Kennedy screamed at his wife.
A staff member from Kennedy's political magazine, George, told of a dinner in which Bessette made at least a half dozen trips to the bathroom, returning to the table with white rings around her nostrils. "We went from bar to bar, and she wanted to come over to my apartment, but I said no, because I knew it would be an all-nighter," the friend said. "I ... dropped her off at 3 a.m."
The next morning, Kennedy asked why the staffer and his wife were out so late. The staff member replied: "A better question is why your wife didn't want to go home."
Cheating heart According to friends, Kennedy worried that Carolyn was cheating on him with old flame, Michael Bergin, a "Baywatch" actor and former model of Calvin Klein underwear. They continued their affair even after Bessette had moved in with Kennedy, Klein, a Vanity Fair contributing editor as well as Kennedy biographer, said.
Although Bergin cut off the affair after Bessette's marriage, she continued to taunt her husband with Bergin.
Klein said the actor also revealed Carolyn's violent side in an incident in which Bessette got angry after seeing him light an ex-girlfriend's cigarette at a bar.
She showed up at Bergin's door and threw two heavy candles through a window and a mirror, shattering both. "Then she knocked my television set and VCR onto the floor and jumped on my VCR and squashed it," Bergin told Klein.
"I ran out of the apartment. I'm very athletic and fast, but she caught up with me and started yelling at me and taunting me, calling me a baby."
Kennedy's friends suspected that something similar happened to him when he was rushed to an emergency room for an operation to repair a severed nerve. Kennedy said the injury was an accident, but he had told friends that he felt trapped in an abusive relationship. "Carolyn was like a wild horse," the acquaintance from George told Klein. "She had a trash mouth. ... She used to call John a fag all the time."
Public scrutiny drove Bessette into depression, the friend said. She refused to leave their apartment and spent long periods crying, telling friends that she hated "living in a fishbowl." Klein said Carolyn reportedly stormed out of a marital counselor's office when her drug use was raised.
Klein said Bessette's self-absorption made her late for the fatal 1999 plane ride with her husband and sister, who had arrived at the airport in New Jersey while it was still light. The plane, piloted by Kennedy, went down in darkness off the coast of Martha's Vineyard near Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Klein quotes a hair colorist named Colin Lively as saying he saw Carolyn order a pedicurist to apply her toenail polish three times that day to match a fabric she had brought to the salon. During the pedicure, her mobile phone rang over and over, Lively told Klein.
"What?" she said impatiently into the phone. "I told you I'm getting a pedicure."

the most exciting thing i ever saw on tv was when mrs. kennedy hocked a loogie and spat at the papparazzi camera. gosh, i loved it. no star has come close since.
>Was she like this before they mnarried, or did she hide it well? If >so why did he marry her?
Because all rich, nice, and gorgeous men marry bitches. George Harrison: "Hi Homer, I'm George Harrison." Homer Simpson: "OH MY GOD - Where did you get that brownie?!!"
I was just reading this on aol. Seems she is always painted in an unflattering light. If any of it's true I agree that she sounds like she was a manic depressive.
>>>>Maybe she hid it? Before they were married, she looked VERY different
-- long, wavy brown hair, a more curvaceous figure, full eyebrows, she smiled and she wore jeans. Afterward, she became a grimacing, plucked (facially) bald, almost platinum blonde stick in designer outfits.<<<
I have mixed feelings. I'm sure she was no saint. But I also think JFK's male friends were jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous, jealous (of CB). Bunch of bitches.
Second, I number only one coke user among my acquaintances/friends (that I know of). She (my friend) of course, has other acquaintances/friends who use coke. In no case, as far as I understand, no matter how hard they are partying, do they go to the bathroom and use the coke, then return w/their nostrils ringed with the stuff. Wishful, disparaging thinking, IMO. Someone may be out of their minds, but I just have trouble believing her coming back from the can with outlines around her nostrils. In the gutter, that's hard to find, let alone in someone's loft.
I think a lot of JFK's guy friends flattered themselves that they had influence in his life, and their lives were thus rendered significant (go figure, but I know some of them thought that way) and when he fell in love and semi left the tribe, they got pissy and blamed the chick.
I do think she butchered her appearance for awhile after the wedding. For the years they dated, all around NY she'd be in long, wavy light brown hair w/blonde streaks, very striking, very athletic, not prissy looking. Then for awhile, post-matrimony, she went platinum with almost bald eyebrows. But in the last eight months or so of her life she seemed to be relaxing a lot of that.

I don't know about that, since the flying conditions were bad, anyway, and he was out of his element. But it's clear she was a hothead, if not a cokehead, as well. Remember that fight in the park, she looked positively abusive. Some guys really dig that. She always looked like she'd been crying, to me. High, high maintenance woman. What the hell did she do all day long, anyway? Just pedicures and manicures and hair bleaching? She really was attractive when she had more weight on, and had thick brown/highlighted hair. Her hair was so full and wavy before, I can't figure out how she got it so sleek and straight in later years. It looked as if she'd thinned it out. Or it fell out on its own from all the bleach. I never cared for her, something just wasn't right, there.

I thought she was beautiful at their wedding, and she was blonde there. After their death, there was a photo spread of her in Vanity Fair, she was playing with her dog, and looked so athletic, real, and warm. I was amazed, because outside the wedding, I never thought she was beautiful before.
I don't think JFK Jr's friends made this up. There's evidence stuff was going badly. Everyone at his magazine heard him telling her to get her stuff and get out of his life 4 days before they died. Her ex bf testifies to her awful temper. He was living in a hotel. I mean, what more do you want?
I do feel sorry for him. Wish he had married Daryl, who really did love him.

Frankly, I always thought she was ugly. Now that's not a judgement on her personal demons!

On a TV documentary I saw, a long-time family friend was interviewed. He said that JFK Jr.'s relationship with Daryl was very tempestuous, that the two of them didn't bring out the best in each other when they were together.
I suspect JFK Jr. was drawn to strong-willed women (similar to his mother Jackie), and that emotionally he was just as volatile as Daryl and Carolyn Bessette.
Most likely Carolyn was reasonably well-adjusted while she and John were dating: She was an attractive woman with a great job working for Calvin Klein, and she was only partially in the public spotlight. But after the wedding, all that changed. That may have triggered her depression and (increased?) drug use.
It's too bad when a book like this comes out and, truthfully or not, tarnishes her image because, unfortunately, she can't defend herself against the allegations. It must be very painful and frustrating for her family.

I think this is the first time I've seen anyone mention *HER* family. Thank you. Sheesh, everyone goes on and on about a Kennedy dying. On that day the Bessette family lost 2 loved ones for goodness sake, but no one seems to care about that.
I also agree, whether she was those things or not, writing a book about it, making money off of it, when she's dead and can't defend herself, seems wrong IMO.

It is a creepy way to make money isn't it? Has anyone seen this author interviewed yet? I'm sure he'll be making the rounds and I don't understand why he calls himself a 'biographer'. At least Kitty Kelly admits to being a plain old gossip writer. And I'm not sure I understand how it serves the public interest to know someone's dirty laundry after they are dead (and in the big picture--they haven't been dead all that long). How would anyone feel about having a dead family member smeared all over and staring at them on magazine and book stands (along with the Today show, ET, etc.)

This is actually hilariously believable. Back in the good old early 80s I was at the wedding of my dear friends. At one point a group of people came out of the rest room area (men and women) including the bride and groom and some of them had cute little white powder smudges under their noses. We had to tell them to wipe it off before their parents saw it (although they probably would have thought they had been scarfing down powdered doughnuts). By this point people had been drinking and dancing for quite a while and I'm sure they got their rest room refreshments in a hurry and weren't even paying attention to what they looked like. And this was no "gutter" wedding. So you never know. You know the older I get ( and I am getting up there but don't mean to pull age rank here ) I have learned to never ever discount anything anymore as impossible. Anything and everything is possible.
On CBK as a gold digging abusive self indulgent ne'er do well - is anyone really surprised by this. Caroline should have sued HER mother for producing such a succubus who clearly intentionally inflicted emotional distress on John. She was giving those vibes off for a long time. Her history just screams this to me. Please don't blame it on manic depression - I have plenty of manic depressive friends who are NICE and don't become sadistic bitches from pedicure hell when they hit a rough spot. She was what she was. Poor John he seemed to be a decent and nice person but men can be so pathetic in choosing a first wife. And, yes, I really do believe she or their arguing had something to do with the crash. Does anyone believe they were having a peaceful and cheerful chat during that flight? (Doesn't excuse his lack of judgment in flying that night)

Let's not lionize or otherwise grant Sainthood to little broken-footed John-john. In any case, he had only reniforced the notion that the Kennedy men have a seemingly congenital capacity for reckless judgement. He ought not to have flown into that evening haze while crippled and without instrument certification. And he probably should not have wed this possibly demented harridan; bad judgement again, especially considering that he virtually had his pick on almost any woman on the planet. He should have settled for Sarah Jessica Parker, who probably would have sent Matthew Broderick packing on the first cell phone call from Johnjohn, but not attacked him mid-flight on the way to Martha's vineyard.

There definitely been some kind of contention between the Bessettes and Kennedys since they issued a "wrongful death" suit against the Kennedy family.

Somehow, death has a way of bailing out the family of JFK, so that they're not around to witness their disgrace or embarrassment.
JFK's assassination saved him big time both from the disgrace and ignominy of the Vietnam War - had he lived, he almost certainly would have sent US troops there - and also from subsequent revelations of his reckless philandering. Again, had he lived, his adulteries probably would have been revealed during his presidency. Death was, in fact, a face-saving way out for JFK from quite a few major jams.
Jackie Onassis benefited from death - her second husband Aristotle's death pre- empted an inevitable divorce, and left her with the more honorable status of "widow" once again. Her own death many years later saved her from the anguish and disappointment of watching a son she raised with great care die so carelessly.
And now JFK Jr. - his own death forever ended any chance of him screwing up like his other cousins. Again, like his mother, his own death - and death of his wife - saved him from enduring shame and embarrassment for the wretched marriage that would have unravelled so publicly and horribly.
Far from being a "Kennedy curse," death has been a blessing for the family of JFK.

And how do you know this? All the evidence I've come across showed that JFK was seriously considering getting us out while cleverly saving face. At his death, the war was in it's very infancy with very few of our troops committed.

Doubt it. Neither Johnson's nor Nixon's affairs came to light for many years after they left office.

Jackie wouldn't allow JFK Jr. to take up flying. He started lessons only after she died.
